A Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scan is an amazing diagnostic tool. This test is quick, painless, noninvasive, and safe, and it’s one of the best ways to test body composition—a great tool for weight loss—and bone mineral density, which is especially important for postmenopausal women who are at greatest risk of osteoporosis.
During a DEXA bone density scan, you simply lie on a table while a scanner moves over your body. You will receive a printout showing the distribution and percentages of lean body mass and fat, as well as your bone density compared to “age matched” controls (your same age, sex, and weight) and “young normal” controls (optimal bone density). The lower your bone density, the greater your risk of fracture.
If you are trying to lose weight, this is an excellent tool for tracking your progress and providing motivation on your journey towards optimal weight. And if your scan shows bone loss, either osteopenia or more severe osteoporosis, don’t despair. There are several things you can do to build up bone density. Your physician will review your results and tailor safe, effective programs for permanent weight loss and natural bone building.
A Safe, Natural Bone-Building Protocol
There are several steps you can take to build bone naturally. The following are some of my favorites.
Exercise to Strengthen Bones
The stress exercise exerts on the bones stimulates the production of new cells, and the greater the stress, the greater the benefits. Brisk walking helps maintain bone mass, but weightlifting actually increases it. Adding two or three weekly sessions of moderate weight training to your exercise regimen is imperative for anyone over age 50.
Maintain a Balanced Diet
You already know that getting enough calcium through your daily diet is a cornerstone of bone health. It’s important to also include adequate portions of lean protein with each meal, about three to four- ounces, to help with bone resorption; add lots of fruits and vegetables; and go easy on alcohol, caffeine, sodas, refined sugar and salt, as these promote calcium loss. Stick with “anti-inflammatory” omega-3 fats such as those found in salmon and flaxseed.
Boost Bone Strength With Targeted Supplements
Most physicians recommend a calcium supplement for optimal bone health. There are a number of other vitamins and minerals that are critically important in preventing and treating osteoporosis. These include vitamin K, magnesium, strontium, B-complex vitamins, and vitamin D. You should realize that individual requirements for these nutrients vary significantly. Therefore, I recommend that you have a physician test your blood levels of key nutrients, to design a personalized supplement program.
Balance Hormone Levels
Osteoporosis is associated with the age-related decline of hormones that occurs in both men and women. These hormones, which include estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, and testosterone, monitor the constant breakdown of old bone cells and building up of new ones. When more bone is broken down than is built up, which often happens when hormone levels drop, osteoporosis occurs. Supplementing with natural hormones can help slow down this process.
