Saw Palmetto a “Gift From God”

When Fred was in his late fifties, he began to awaken at night to relieve himself. Over the next few years, these visits to the bathroom gradually increased until he was getting up five times a night. Yet despite this sense of urgency, he had trouble going and his urinary flow was more of a dribble than a steady stream. He tried cutting back on liquids and concentrating on emptying his bladder (which he felt he never quite achieved), but nothing worked.

When Fred finally consulted his doctor about his problem, he was given a prescription drug. The drug he was offered, Proscar (finasteride), does reduce symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in about half of the men who try it, but it has a host of side effects, including decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.

Instead, Fred tried saw palmetto and pygeum, herbal extracts I have been using to treat my patients with BPH for years. Within two weeks, he began noticing improvements. Over the next three months his nighttime trips to the bathroom dwindled from five down to one. He reports that the return of normal urination and a good night’s sleep after all these years is a “gift from God.”

Supplements Improve Sex Life

I recently heard from a newsletter subscriber whose husband had been taking a number of drugs that robbed him of his sex drive. It was very frustrating for both of them. He finally got so fed up with feeling lousy on all of his medications that he replaced them with CoQ10, L-arginine, and other nutritional supplements. Now his libido is back and their sex life is “fantastic.”

Testosterone Improves Anxiety, Depression, Fatigue, and More

Frank had a heart attack followed by the placement of stents in two of his coronary arteries. After that, things fell apart. Worried about his health, Frank became increasingly anxious, depressed, and fatigued. It got to the point that it was an effort to even leave his house. In addition to the drugs he took for his heart condition, his doctors prescribed multiple psychiatric drugs, but none of them worked.

Desperate for help, he came to the Whitaker Wellness Institute. We tried a number of therapies with varying degrees of success until he started testosterone injections. Within a couple of months, this 48-year-old’s mood and outlook brightened, he felt less edgy, and he began losing some of the excess weight that had crept up on him. His lab work also improved, including his cholesterol, triglycerides, and, most dramatically, his C-reactive protein level.
