Lyme Disease

How We Successfully Treat Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is often called the “great imitator.” That’s because the symptoms of this bacterial infection (Borrelia burgdorferi), which is most often transmitted by tick bites, are so diverse that it is often mistaken for a host of other conditions.

For many patients, getting an accurate diagnosis—let alone effective treatment—is a long and tortuous process. They consult numerous doctors and receive multiple diagnoses, such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune diseases, even hypochondria, before the true cause is identified.

The conventional treatment for Lyme disease is a short course of antibiotics. Although many people respond well, others unfortunately do not. This usually prompts physicians to prescribe longer courses of antibiotics, a slippery slope that is often ineffective and contributes to other problems.

There’s a lot we don’t know about chronic Lyme disease. Research suggests antibiotics suppress symptoms but often fail to actually cure the infection. Furthermore, Lyme is one of several tick-borne microbes, and other, undetected infections are often present as well. This may explain why some patients have symptoms that linger or emerge months, even years after the initial infection and treatment.

Most of the patients who come to Whitaker Wellness with Lyme disease have been through the wringer. They’ve tried multiple courses of antibiotics and many other recommended treatments. Our therapeutic approach, however, is unique. After thorough testing, we treat our patients who have Lyme disease with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, intravenous vitamin C, low-dose naltrexone, and other targeted therapies to eradicate microbes, boost the immune system, and address each individual’s symptoms.

Our Unique Therapies

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
The microbes that cause Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, are classified as anaerobic bacteria. Unlike aerobic bacteria, which require oxygen to survive, anaerobic organisms thrive only in the absence of oxygen. During a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, huge quantities of oxygen are delivered throughout the body. While wonderfully healing and therapeutic for human cells, this oxygen-rich environment is inhospitable to anaerobic bacteria, making it an excellent treatment for Lyme disease.

IV Vitamin C
Intravenous vitamin C is a powerful therapy for infectious diseases because it produces blood concentrations of this vitamin that cannot be achieved by oral supplements. At these high levels, vitamin C interacts with iron in the blood to create hydrogen peroxide—the same “bullet” used by white blood cells to destroy bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. Although the hydrogen peroxide created by vitamin C does not harm normal cells, it is toxic to pathogenic bacteria such as Borrelia burgdorferi.

Low-Dose Naltrexone and Other Immune Boosters
Whitaker Wellness’s treatment arsenal for Lyme disease includes potent therapies that help restore the body’s natural ability to fight off infection. Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is a safe, inexpensive prescription medication with a remarkable track record in treating a number of difficult conditions, including Lyme disease. We also optimize our patients’ levels of vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, and other nutrients for enhanced immune function and overall health.

Therapies for Various Symptoms
Patients with Lyme disease present with a wide variety of symptoms, ranging from severe fatigue and joint pain to serious neurological and cardiovascular problems. The great thing about Whitaker Wellness is that we offer proven therapies to treat all these symptoms. They include high-intensity laser, acupuncture, and microcurrent therapy for pain relief, EECP for circulatory disorders, and neurofeedback for mood and memory problems.

Personalized Lifestyle Program

As everyone knows, a good diet, regular exercise, and restorative sleep are the foundation for good health. Unfortunately, severe chronic Lyme disease can interfere with the best of intentions—but our Back to Health Program can help you get back on track.

From day one, you’ll be immersed in a supportive, healing environment. You’ll eat delicious, healthy meals prepared by our gourmet chef and shared with others who are working on their own health issues.

Your Whitaker Wellness physician may also test for food allergies, which can worsen symptoms, and for sleep apnea, a surprisingly common condition that interferes with the most rejuvenating stages of sleep and contributes to a host of health problems.
