Exercise Training

Why You Need Exercise Training

Exercise is one of the most powerful of all therapies. If its benefits could be bottled and sold, it would fly off the shelves. Regular exercise lowers blood pressure and protects against heart disease. It increases levels of protective HDL cholesterol, builds cardiovascular strength, and improves circulation. Because physical activity increases the cells’ sensitivity to insulin, it not only reduces risk of diabetes, but also lowers blood sugar in people who already have diabetes. In addition, exercise strengthens the bones, improves memory and mood, and is essential for enduring weight control.

Everybody knows this. Yet, fewer than two out of 10 adults exercise regularly, and three out of 10 get absolutely no physical activity. We’re too busy, too tired, too old, or too sick. The health care professionals at the Whitaker Wellness Institute don’t buy any of these excuses. We consider exercise to be a primary therapy for reversing disease, preventing future illness, and enhancing quality of life. That’s why physical activity is a cornerstone of our Back to Health Program. Over the past three decades, we have helped tens of thousands of patients of all ages and states of health adopt workout regimens that allow them to exercise safely, comfortably, and regularly for maximum benefits.

How Personalized Exercise Training Helps

If you’re having trouble getting started on an exercise program—or if your physical condition has prevented you from exercising in the past—the Whitaker Wellness Institute can help.

During your Back to Health Program, you will be given a treadmill exercise stress test. The best way to evaluate the engine of a car is not to just look under the hood but to start it up, drive it around, and see how it runs at higher speeds. An exercise stress test is like a road test of your heart: It reveals problems that might only occur with activity.

Based on the results of your exercise stress test and other information, you will receive an individualized exercise prescription, designating the types of exercise you should engage in, as well as the frequency, intensity, and duration of these activities. We’ll teach you how to monitor your heart rate and heed your built-in warning systems to determine your ideal level of intensity. We will also show you how to modify your program as your conditioning improves.

If you need additional help, individualized instruction is available. Our exercise therapist is certified in resistance training (weightlifting), aerobic workouts (brisk walking, jogging, etc.), flexibility exercises (stretching, yoga, and Pilates), and body mechanics (proper posture and movement). We will design a program that fits your medical condition, time constraints, and other concerns—and provide you with the tools and motivation you need to stick with it over the long run.

Exercise training works synergistically with the other innovative therapies and nutritional supplement protocols your Whitaker Wellness physician will prescribe for you. After treatment, many of our patients have been able to reduce or eliminate their reliance on prescription drugs.
