Chiropractic is a therapy that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the spine. Misalignment of the spinal column can have pervasive adverse effects on tissues and oe rgans throughout the body. The restoration of proper alignment through spinal adjustments and other treatments has positive effects on virtually all aspects of health.
This therapy is based on the correction of subluxation of the spinal column. When the spine is even slightly out of alignment, it may impinge on the spinal nerves that branch out to the muscles and various organs. Bringing things back into their proper places through gentle manipulative techniques results in sometimes-miraculous outcomes.
Neck and back pain are the most common conditions treated with chiropractic care. However, skilled practitioners such as our Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner at the Whitaker Wellness Institute have helped many patients get a handle on pain from other sources, such as sports injuries, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, headache, frozen shoulder, and other musculoskeletal problems. In addition, research suggests that by relieving nerve impingement, specific chiropractic maneuvers can improve health in organs throughout the body.
Results are particularly impressive when chiropractic is used in tandem with our other innovative pain-relieving and health-restoring therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy and microcurrent therapy. Patients enrolled in our Back to Health Program often use chiropractic as an important adjunct treatment on the road to wellness.
A typical chiropractic treatment at the Whitaker Wellness Institute might include heat and/or cold applied to the affected area, massage to relax the muscles, therapeutic ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, laser, and percussion techniques. However, the centerpiece of chiropractic is the adjustment and manipulation, in which the chiropractor restores vertebral alignment, taking the stress off impinged nerves and overworked muscles.
Intersegmental traction is particularly effective for treating pain associated with herniated/bulging discs and degenerative disc disease in the low back and neck. The patient lies on a specialized roller table while traction-distraction forces are applied to spinal structures in a precise and graduated manner. This “decompression effect” gently separates the vertebrae and lowers pressure inside targeted discs, causing retraction of the herniated or bulging disc, reduction of pressure on the nerve root, faster healing, and excellent clinical response.
Other Cutting-Edge Treatment Modalities
Our chiropractor is also certified in several additional cutting-edge treatment modalities. They include Active Release Techniques (ART), a soft tissue/movement therapy for muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves; Graston Technique, an innovative treatment that effectively breaks down scar tissue and fascial restrictions and improves range of motion; and Niel Asher Technique (NAT), which involves specific sequences of pressure points and manipulations and is particularly effective in treating frozen shoulder.
As a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner, he is also experienced in kinesiology taping and other rehabilitative techniques that provide stability to muscles and joints and enhance the body’s natural healing process.
As a therapy for acute neck and low back pain, chiropractic care is an undisputed winner. And although it is primarily used to relieve musculoskeletal pain, at the Whitaker Wellness Institute we also successfully use chiropractic care to treat a number of conditions including, but not limited to:
- Back pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Frozen shoulder
- Neck pain
- Sports injuries
