- What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is based on the concept that different parts of the body have corresponding "reflex points" on the feet, hands, and ears. Reflexologists are trained health care professionals who apply pressure to specific points that connect with various organs, glands, and other tissues.
During a typical treatment, the reflexologist looks for tenderness and other symptoms, usually on the feet but also on the hands and ears and, by manipulating these areas, releases blockages in order to restore the proper flow of blood and energy and stimulate healing. For example, if a patient has back pain, the arches of the feet are manipulated. If her or she has a headache, nausea, or insomnia, tender areas in the web between the thumb and forefinger are squeezed or pinched.
- How Reflexology Can Help You
Although reflexology is a remarkably soothing and relaxing experience, it is not a foot massage. It is a therapeutic modality that provides tremendous benefits when used alone or in conjunction with other treatments. Patients at the clinic have had particularly good results with reflexology for the treatment of insomnia, digestive complains, anxiety, headaches, and other conditions in which stress plays a role. Circulatory problems in the lower extremities and throughout the body also respond well to this therapy. Of course, reflexology is a wonderful treatment for podiatric problems such as corns, calluses, and foot pain as well.
Because reflexology is so effective at promoting relaxation and increasing sense of well-being, our physicians at Whitaker Wellness often prescribe it in conjunction with other pain-relieving and health-enhancing therapies. These treatments work together to provide lasting relief and often help patients reduce or eliminate their reliance on prescription drugs.
