- How We Treat Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects an area of the brain that produces dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates movement and affects emotional response. As dopamine levels fall, symptoms of Parkinson's emerge, including tremors, muscle stiffness and rigidity, and problems with gait and movement.
If you have Parkinson's disease, you've probably been told the discouraging facts: It's progressive, and there is no known cure. But at Whitaker Wellness, we tell patients that there is hope for people with Parkinson's disease.
Conventional treatment for Parkinson's disease is aimed at maintaining dopamine levels. The treatment of choice is a drug called l-dopa, which is converted into dopamine, along with another drug to ensure that more l-dopa reaches the brain. As Parkinson's disease progresses, larger and larger amounts of l-dopa must be taken, and this often causes side effects such as nausea, paranoia, hallucinations, and involuntary jerking movements. In addition, some patients become completely resistant to the drug over time.
Let's make it clear that the Whitaker Wellness Institute is not offering false hope or miracle cures for patients with Parkinson's disease. We do, however, utilize several powerful, innovative therapies to reduce symptoms, help slow disease progression, and improve quality of life. After a treatment course, many of our patients exhibit noticeable improvements in gait, tremors, speech, and mood. Because optimal results are obtained with a series of treatments, we encourage patients with Parkinson's disease to enroll in our one-, two-, or three-week Back to Health Program.
- Our Drug-Free Approach
IV Glutathione
One of our bedrock therapies for Parkinson's disease is intravenous (IV) glutathione. Glutathione is the body's premier antioxidant, and if you have Parkinson's disease, you likely have diminished brain levels of this crucial free radical fighter. The good news is that boosting your glutathione stores can slow the progress of your disease.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and EECP
IV glutathione is only one component of our program for Parkinson's disease. Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which both boost circulation and supply the brain with vital oxygen and nutrients, are also integral treatments. HBOT is particularly important because, in addition to improving blood supply to the brain, it also stimulates the release of regenerating stem cells and the creation of new blood vessels, which provide enduring benefits. The unique combination of therapies offered at the Whitaker Wellness Institute will help you enjoy renewed energy and sense of well-being—even after you leave the clinic.
- Personalized Lifestyle Program
We instruct our patients with Parkinson's disease in an exercise program tailored for their specific needs. Although exercise may be the last thing anyone with impaired movement wants to undertake, studies show that regular walking and other types of exercise can actually retard the progression of the disease.
Nutrition is also important. During your stay at the Back to Health Program, you will eat healthy meals prepared by our chef and receive instruction in how to stick with a therapeutic diet after you return home. In addition to diet, your Whitaker Wellness physician will prescribe a number of nutritional supplements such as coenzyme Q10 and creatine that have been scientifically proven to improve Parkinson's symptoms.
