- How We Address Men's Health Challenges
Men tend to be much more cavalier about their health than women. They often ignore warning signs of disease and may have to be dragged to a doctor's office by a concerned family member. It's important for men to be more proactive about their health. After all, their expected lifespan is shorter than women's, and they're at greater risk of heart disease and a number of other health problems.
When it comes to quintessential male problems, conventional physicians have a one-track mind. Men with prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), for example, are given two choices: drugs or surgery. Prostate drugs may relieve symptoms, but they have significant side effects, including decreased libido and impotence in some men. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a surgical procedure that involves cutting away abnormal prostate tissue, also improves symptoms but does nothing to stop prostate growth and future problems.
At Whitaker Wellness, we do not shun all conventional therapies. Viagra and other drugs prescribed for erectile dysfunction really do work and, for most men, have minimal side effects. However, erectile problems can also be addressed by safer, natural therapies that improve multiple aspect of health, including flagging energy, muscle loss, diminished sex drive, and mood and memory difficulties. For all of these conditions and more, the Whitaker Wellness Institute offers several unique natural treatment options.
- Our Unique Therapies
Treat Root Causes of Sexual Dysfunction
You can't expect to have topnotch sexual function if you have poor overall health. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled diabetes, and other disorders involving impaired circulation are commonly linked with sexual dysfunction. That's because optimal blood flow is required to produce erections. Other conditions that can affect interest in sex and the ability to act on that interest include anxiety, depression, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain, and neurological problems. Once these health issues are tackled with our comprehensive treatment programs, desire and function often return.
During your stay at the Back to Health Program, your Whitaker Wellness physician will evaluate your current drug regimen. An astounding number of prescription drugs—more than 130 in all—interfere with sexual function. These drugs include antidepressants and other psychotropic medications, some blood pressure–lowering drugs (especially beta blockers), stimulants, narcotics, antihistamines, sleeping pills, and peptic ulcer and heart meds. Replacing these with safe, natural alternatives will go a long ways toward restoring optimal function.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Testosterone replacement is a very popular therapy among our male patients at the Whitaker Wellness Institute. Testosterone production tapers off throughout
adulthood, and drops in this crucial hormone are linked not only with sexual problems but also with increased risk of obesity, loss of muscle and bone mass, heart disease, diabetes, and even premature death. Supplemental testosterone is an amazing libido lifter—if lack of sexual interest is your problem, it's an almost guaranteed fix. Testosterone also improves erectile function for many men. Used appropriately, this underappreciated hormone is safe and exceptionally effective.
Nutritional Supplements for Prostate Enlargement
If you're a male over age 55, you probably know the drill: nighttime visits to the bathroom, a sense of urgency, trouble getting started, dribbling, and other symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Your Whitaker Wellness physician will prescribe a clinically tested nutritional supplement regimen that has been demonstrated to effectively reduce symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) without adverse side effects.
Prostate Cancer
Although we do not treat cancer per se at the Whitaker Wellness Institute, we do offer our patients who have cancer therapies and nutritional supplement regimens that boost the immune system, lower PSA, and support overall health.
EECP for Erectile Dysfunction
Although I wouldn't recommend a course of enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) strictly for erectile dysfunction (ED), it provides a nice side benefit for
those receiving treatment for cardiovascular disease. The effects of EECP on ED were discovered serendipitously when men undergoing this therapy for heart disease had unexpected improvements in erectile function. This outcome, which has since been confirmed in clinical studies, makes perfect sense—EECP increases levels of a signal molecule called nitric oxide, improves blood flow, and stimulates the formation of new blood vessels.
- Personalized Lifestyle Program
Harvard researchers have found that men who eat a good diet, exercise regularly, and maintain their optimal weight are able to delay age-associated erectile dysfunction by about 10 years! Among the bad habits that contribute to sexual problems are drinking too much alcohol, overeating (obesity), and smoking—which impairs erectile function even in younger men. Your Whitaker Wellness physician will advise you as to a proper diet, and should you attend our Back to Health Program, you will be started on a comprehensive dietary program, along with instructions on how to stay on track once your return home.
Exercise is essential for all aspects of health, and our exercise physiologist will create a workout regimen specifically tailored to your needs. Better yet, you'll learn how to incorporate exercise into your long-term plan for optimal health.
