- How We Successfully Treat Heart Disease
According to the American Heart Association, 81 million Americans have coronary artery disease or another cardiovascular disorder, and 8.5 million heart attacks are sustained every year. First-line treatment for heart disease is usually medication. Although drugs may improve signs and symptoms of heart disease, thanks to their unpleasant and sometimes deadly side effects, they often fail to improve patients' overall health.
People with heart disease are also often pushed unnecessarily into angioplasty or bypass surgery. More than a million of these procedures are performed every year, yet for the vast majority of patients, they are completely unwarranted. Except in a small, easily identified subgroup of people, bypass and angioplasty do not save lives or prevent heart attacks. In fact, scientific studies have shown that patients treated with a more conservative approach do just as well as those who undergo invasive procedures.
At the Whitaker Wellness Institute, we use natural therapies that, unlike drugs and surgery, address the underlying causes of heart disease. As a result, our patients have the potential of actually reversing this condition. We also specialize in second opinions for people who have been recommended to have angioplasty or bypass operations. Because heart disease is such a serious condition and treatments involve a number of therapy sessions, we encourage these patients to enroll in our Back to Health Program.
- Our Drug-Free Approach
EECP: A Natural Bypass
Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a mechanical therapy that rhythmically directs blood from the legs and lower abdomen toward the heart,
delivering oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood to the heart muscle and alleviating chest pain. It also stimulates the growth of collateral arteries around blockages of the coronary arteries—making it the closest thing going to coronary artery bypass without the trauma and potential complications of surgery. The Whitaker Wellness Institute was one of the first clinics to adopt EECP, and it remains one of our most popular and effective treatments for coronary artery disease and heart failure.
EDTA Chelation
Free radical damage and poor circulation are hallmarks of heart disease, and we
offer an intravenous therapy that safely and effectively addresses these concerns. EDTA chelation is a synthetic protein that, when infused into the blood, attaches to minerals (including lead and other toxic metals as well as excess calcium) and carries them out of the body in the urine. It improves the health of the arteries and facilitates circulation, making it an excellent treatment for cardiovascular disease.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Another therapy that benefits the cardiovascular system is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The heart pumps nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, and poor circulation associated with impaired cardiovascular
function may lead to a reduction in blood flow to critical tissues. A course of HBOT not only oxygenates tissues throughout the body, but also encourages the creation of new blood vessels for lasting results.
Supplements, Not Drugs
A cornerstone of our protocol for treating heart disease is nutritional supplementation. Antioxidants, B-complex vitamins, magnesium, fish oil, coenzyme Q10, and other nutrients play specific, well-studied roles in the treatment and prevention of heart disease. Your Whitaker Wellness physician will prescribe an individualized nutritional supplement program that addresses your particular condition.
One of the best things about our approach is we are usually able to help our patients get off their prescription drugs. For example, niacin, flaxseed, and other supplements safely lower cholesterol as effectively as statin drugs. Coenzyme Q10 addresses heart failure far better than any prescription medication. And other nutritional protocols help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, protect against cardiac arrhythmias, and strengthen the heart.
- Personalized Lifestyle Program
There is a well-recognized relationship between diet and heart disease. Saturated fat from animal foods and trans fats from processed oils raise cholesterol, impede blood flow, and contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, raw nuts and seeds, and cold-water fish, on the other hand, contain vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids that nurture the cardiovascular system. During your stay at the Back to Health Program, you will not only have the opportunity to eat heart-healthy meals prepared by our personal chef, but you will also receive instruction in shopping, cooking, and sticking with this diet once you return home.
If you have heart disease, exercise is a must—but it is important that you go about it in the right way. Our exercise physiologist will determine your exercise capability and give you specific instructions in how to exercise within a safe yet therapeutic range. We will also help you with one of the biggest challenges for most of our patients: staying on track with a regular exercise program after you leave the clinic.
