- How We Support Patients With Cancer
Every year, nearly 560,000 Americans die of cancer, and it is perhaps our most-feared disease. But why is cancer so terrifying? Far more people die of heart problems, yet we don't fear cardiovascular disease like we do cancer. The answer is simple. It's because we know that conventional cancer treatments aren't very effective. They're also toxic and dangerous, debilitating, and dehumanizing, and patients often suffer more from these modalities than they do from the disease itself.
We've spent hundreds of billions of dollars on the "war on cancer" in the past 40 years, yet we've made no significant progress. The death rate from cancer has not changed appreciably since 1950, and the survival gains attributed to blockbuster drugs—which often cost more than $100,000 per year—are measured in months rather than years.
A Safer, Gentler Approach
Despite what you may hear, there are many safe, nontoxic therapies for patients with cancer. This gentler, more humane approach is based not on the "poison, cut, and burn" paradigm of conventional oncology, but instead on the concept of strengthening the body and giving it the tools needed to fight the disease on its own terms.
For many, the conventional approach feels right. Should you choose this path, we encourage you to explore the adjunct therapies offered at Whitaker Wellness, as they have been shown to reduce side effects, enhance efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation, and increase survival.
Others feel more comfortable stepping outside the box, and for them, a more comprehensive treatment course is indicated. We help these patients manage their disease in a manner similar to that in which we help those with heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions: we fortify the body's innate ability to heal itself—and in the process improve symptoms, quality of life, and overall outcomes.
- Our Unique Therapies
Some of the therapies offered at the Whitaker Wellness Institute enhance immune function and the body's ability to help put the brakes on the undisciplined, rapid cell division that is characteristic of cancer. Others improve overall health and protect against cachexia, or wasting, which is a serious concern for cancer patients. And more than a few have direct anti-tumor or anti-metastasis effects. But they all have one thing in common: None of these therapies ravage the body or further deteriorate quality of life. In fact, in virtually all cases, they improve it.
Of course, no one treatment can guarantee success for everyone, but here's an overview of the therapies we use to support patients with cancer at the Whitaker Wellness Institute.
IV Vitamin C and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Studies conducted at the National Institutes of Health reveal that when blood concentrations of vitamin C reach target levels—which is only possible through IV administration—it becomes a potent chemotherapeutic agent that kills cancer cells but, unlike chemo drugs, leaves healthy cells intact. Because cancer cells thrive in the absence of oxygen, we also treat patients with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Exposure to massive amounts of oxygen makes malignant cells less virulent and more vulnerable to other therapies.
Supplements and Supportive Therapies
During your stay at the Back to Health Program, your Whitaker Wellness physician will also design a personalized nutritional supplement program for you. The past decade has seen an explosion of research on the benefits of vitamin D, melatonin, curcumin, modified citrus pectin, and other supplements for people with cancer. A targeted supplement program is imperative for anyone with this disease. We also offer a number of other therapies such as acupuncture, reflexology, and low-dose naltrexone that have been shown to ameliorate symptoms and improve quality of life.
- Personalized Lifestyle Program
Nutrition is a powerful therapy for patients who desperately need to keep up with the malnutrition drain brought on by cancer and stave off cachexia (wasting). At Whitaker Wellness, we counsel patients in an appropriate diet that emphasizes nutrient-dense vegetables and fruit and lean protein and omits sugar, unhealthy fats, and processed foods.
