Treating Type 2 Diabetes: Kent’s Success Story

When patients come to the Whitaker Wellness Institute for diabetes treatment, they are “prescribed” vitamins, herbs, noninvasive therapies, and other natural treatments for diabetes instead of oral diabetes drugs or insulin. Why? Because these natural treatments for diabetes really work—and because using oral diabetes drugs and insulin is one of the biggest mistakes in diabetes treatment that conventional medicine makes. The following story is a perfect example.

Conventional Diabetes Treatment Worse Than the Disease

Kent Moore was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes more than 20 years ago, after he quit a three-pack-a-day smoking habit and gained a substantial amount of weight.

For the next 10 years, his diabetes treatment regimen consisted of various combos and increasing doses of oral diabetes drugs as his blood sugar rose in tandem with his weight. In 2003, Kent was shifted to insulin, and things went from bad to worse. With every passing year he gained more weight, his blood sugars climbed higher—and, incredibly, his doctor kept upping his insulin dose.

Kent topped out at 341 pounds and 220 units of insulin, yet despite all of this conventional diabetes treatment his blood sugar was still out of control, and he had developed several complications, including neuropathy, kidney disease, hypertension, and sleep apnea. He was rapidly barreling downhill—until he came to Whitaker Wellness.

Fortunately, Kent was able to break this insidious cycle. At the urging of his father-in-law, a Health & Healing subscriber, Kent visited the clinic in September 2013. When he arrived, he was on two types of insulin plus another diabetes med, a statin, and drugs for hypertension, heart disease, heartburn, and pain—11 prescriptions in all!

Following our longstanding policy for treating type 2 diabetes, Kent’s physician took him off insulin during his first appointment. His other medications, except for one blood pressure pill, were also discontinued. Stopping drugs, especially insulin, causes concern among patients because their conventional doctors lead them to believe they’re essential, even lifesaving. As Kent said, “It was a little scary at first. Before, I wouldn’t go anywhere without my insulin. I felt like I had to have it at every meal in order to survive.”

Nevertheless, he got with the program and started on the mini-fast with exercise (replacing breakfast with morning exercise and fasting until lunchtime), a low-glycemic diet, and targeted nutritional supplements. During his Back to Health Program at the clinic, Kent lost 30 pounds, and his blood sugar and blood pressure held steady—without insulin or oral diabetic drugs.

Natural Diabetes Treatments Leave Patients Hopeful and Encouraged

I spoke to Kent just after he returned home. “I weighed myself last night, and I was 289. That’s 52 pounds since I was at the clinic, got off insulin, and started doing the mini-fast. I’ve also modified my portion sizes, and I’m eating healthier. My fasting sugars continue to go down—they’re actually less than when I was on insulin. I do slip occasionally. I went to a birthday party and overdid it a little, but even then it was no higher than when I was on insulin.

“I have so much more energy now that I’m off insulin and the other medications. They took the life out of me. I couldn’t even climb the stairs without wheezing. It’s like I got my life back. I have a two-year-old daughter, and I’m now encouraged that I will be able to see her grow up.”

Kent’s Diabetes Treatment Update: 127 Pounds Lighter, Blood Sugar Lower

One thing Kent has going for him is motivation—he wants to be around for his wife and young daughter, and he is exceptionally compliant with the recommended diet, exercise, and supplement program. It’s really paying off. We interviewed him recently and this is what he had to say:

“It has been 18 months since I waddled through the door at the Whitaker Wellness Institute at 341 pounds. I stepped on the scale this morning at 214 pounds. My blood sugars are lower and more consistent then I was ever able to maintain while on insulin.

“My energy level is far better than it has been in years, which is a good thing since we recently purchased two new ‘The Little Gym’ locations in North Austin. I have a three year old at home and a gym full of kids every day at work. It is nice being able to sit cross-legged on the floor and teach classes. That is one of the little but important things I could not have done a year ago.

“It has been so busy at the gyms that I have not even tried to diet, but the weight still slowly drops. I only step on the scale once a week, and every week I expect to see the weight going up but it doesn’t. I know the supplements are a big part of it, but equally important are the lifestyle changes we have made as a family. We eat at home much more then we used to, and we have learned how to cook healthy.

“I have become more and more frustrated with the medical establishment today. The majority of the internal medicine doctors I have seen over the last decade wanted to medicate me without otherwise treating me. It is so frustrating.

“The program I started at Whitaker Wellness—getting off insulin and other drugs and on a health-enhancing program—was a lifeboat for me. For the first time in many years, my health is not an anchor preventing me from living life to the fullest.”

Natural Treatments for Diabetes = Kent’s Road Back to Health

In addition to finally having his diabetes and weight under control, his hypertension, neuropathy, kidney disease, and sleep apnea he was suffering with are also much improved thanks to his new way of life. I’m so proud of Kent and I see many healthy, happy years ahead of him. It’s a privilege to be part of his remarkable journey back to health.
